Washington currently follows the 2023 National Electrical Code, but the state has adopted the 2026 NEC with an effective date of December 31, 2026. The Washington Department of Labor & Industries is currently reviewing proposed state amendments before the new code takes effect.

For property owners, the change does not mean every existing electrical system suddenly needs to be replaced or upgraded. It does mean that new electrical installations and other work subject to current permitting and inspection requirements will need to follow the applicable standards.

Washington Is Moving into a New Electrical Code Cycle

The National Electrical Code is updated on a three-year cycle to address electrical installation practices, new technology, equipment, and safety standards.
Washington reviews its own electrical rules during each code cycle. Labor & Industries adopted the 2026 NEC by reference ahead of its December 31 effective date, then opened another review process to consider Washington-specific amendments.

A public hearing on those proposed rules was held September 14, 2026. The review gives electrical contractors, industry groups, inspectors, and other stakeholders a chance to weigh in before the state finishes the amendment process.

The result will become the framework electricians use when completing electrical work covered by the new standards throughout Washington.

New Codes Matter Most When Electrical Work Is Being Done

An electrical code update is not an order for every homeowner to immediately replace panels, wiring, outlets, or other existing equipment.
The new standards become more relevant when homeowners start new electrical projects, complete major upgrades, remodel parts of a property, or install equipment that requires new circuits or changes to the electrical system.
